The Brunch Story

In Oxford dictionary, brunch means a late morning meal eaten instead of breakfast and lunch. The concept of brunch can be traced back to the upper-class British tradition where men and women gathered for decadent early lunches, complete with meats, eggs and adult beverages. The word itself was first appeared in an 1895 article by author Guy Beringer which then spread into American shores by the late 1920s.

The word brunch and the culture become more popular in the era where business traveling was still done by train, and supposedly because of some Hollywood actors like John Barrymore, Helen Hayes and Clark Gable frequently stopped off in Chicago to the famed Pump Room at the Ambassador Hotel to enjoy a late morning meal on Sundays. From there, and after the World War II, brunch and Sunday brunch, especially were increasingly popular.

According to Stanford University professor Carl Degler in a 1980 Chicago Tribune article on the rise of America’s brunch culture, the social change might be responsible for why Sunday brunch became so popular. “After the World War II, large numbers of American married women entered the workforce for the first time. Married women needed a relief on Sunday, too, thus the rise in popularity of Sunday brunch eaten out.” he said.¹
